Health insurance or Medicaid said no in Kansas? Deadlines and free help
In Kansas, your health plan is regulated by Kansas Insurance Department (KID), Consumer Assistance Division, if it is a state-regulated plan.
Kansas runs its own independent review of denials: External Review (Kansas Insurance Department). You generally have 120 days to ask for it.
External review means a doctor or reviewer outside your plan decides again. Internal appeal means your plan looks at its own decision again.

How to tell which agency regulates your plan
Contact the Kansas Insurance Department if you bought insurance yourself or have insurance from an employer that does business only in Kansas. Step 1: Appeal to your plan in Kansas
What it is called: Internal review (appeal) with your insurer or health plan
Kansas law treats you as having finished the internal appeal if your insurer or plan does not strictly follow the appeal rules in state or federal law, even if the insurer says it mostly complied or that its error was minor. You can also go to external review if you have not received a final internal decision within 60 days of asking for it, unless you asked for the delay.

Urgent care in Kansas: faster decisions
Outside review
Expedited review is for an emergency medical condition: a sudden condition needing immediate care; a condition where the standard time frame would seriously jeopardize your life or health or your ability to regain maximum function; or a denial of experimental or investigational treatment when your doctor certifies in writing that it would be significantly less effective if not started promptly. The reviewer must resolve it within 72 hours of receiving the request, or faster if your condition requires.
Law: K.S.A. 40-22a13, 40-22a14, 40-22a15, 40-22a16
Medicaid
Ask for an expedited hearing on the request form (or any time before the hearing) and include medical records or a written opinion from a medical professional showing an urgent medical need. Without documentation the request is denied. If approved, the hearing is scheduled as soon as possible, no later than 7 working days after the expedited request is received.
